Workshop Description

Bring your 5-string banjo for clawhammer instruction with Frank and Allie Lee! All students will receive one-on-one instruction with Frank and Allie as well as lots of time jamming songs and tunes from Music Roots repertoire as well as Frank & Allie’s favorites from the Southeast.

Beginners and early intermediate folks will join Allie for an introduction to tuning, the basic strum, playing along in a jam, easy “licks and tricks”, and tunes to play with others. Confident intermediate and advanced players will join Frank for techniques including drop thumb, using the 5th string melodically, alternate string pull-offs, playing up the neck, and tunes & songs for jamming and solo performances.

  • standard tuning, double C tuning, and modal tuning

BANJO SET-UP

– learn names of the parts of the banjo

– discussion of bridge height, head, woods, pot size, etc and how they affect playability and tone

– right hand fingernails vs use of picks
